Oxymoron: tolerant liberal (updated)

OK, my raging-liberal sister will be upset that I’m writing about her, but here goes.

A few weeks ago, I was at a bachelorette party for my best friend.  One of her fiance’s family members had just moved to the Austin area from San Francisco.  She was concerned about moving to Texas because she wanted a tolerant, diverse, artistic society, and she was happy to learn that Austin was much like that.  She and the fiance’s sister fawned over how wonderful Austin was that way.  Being a conservative, however, I know differently about the “tolerance” in this town.  I rolled my eyes at my two conservative friends at the table, who are *gasp* public school teachers.

Anyway, I relayed this story to my sister, and she got all mad and said that this proved what the family member was worried about.  I told her I rolled my eyes because if I had professed my party alignment and talked of how proud I was to have gone to the Texas Republican Convention as an alternate delegate, she would have probably asked to be moved to the other end of the table.  I told her that most liberals who claim to be tolerant are only tolerant of views with which they agree.

One 14-year-old girl learned a similar lesson, and I hope her classmates (and some teachers) learned from the experience.  Michelle Malkin has linked to her story.

I’m also reminded of something from “The View” this morning.  Yes, I turned it on for a few minutes only to hear Whoopi bantering about her protest outing and how those who voted for Prop. 8 should sit down with gay families to put a face to the issue.  I submit, however, that those who voted against Prop. 8 are probably the ones who need to sit down and find out why people are voting against the issue, especially the people in the churches where they are protesting.  Classy (warning for language at the link).

Update: Michelle Malkin links to another story of “tolerance.”  This actually smacks of a Jesse Jackson-style shakedown, which consisted of a threatened boycott by African-Americans of some large company, say Toyota, if some “ransom” was not paid.
