Shocker: Jefferson defeated (updated)

Well, well.  I am becoming more and more impressed with Louisianans (my parents are born and bred Cajuns, so I have some experience with the state). They’ve gone from continually electing some of the most corrupt leaders (eg. Gov. Edwards) to some of the best (eg. Gov. Jindal).

Today, in an election delayed by Hurricane Gustav, it appears that voters have ousted Rep. William “I keep my bribes on ice” Jefferson after many believed he would be reelected.  He was defeated by Republican Ahn “Joseph” Cao, who will become the first Vietnamese American in Congress.  After he easily won the primary election against a former TV anchor, I was worried he would end up with the seat.  However, it looks like voters sent him packing.  Good for them.

Another seat was also up for grabs in LA today.  Republicans held on to the seat of the retiring Rep. Jim McCrery.  Dr. John Fleming won against his Democratic opponent in a close race.  So it’s a gain and a retain for the GOP today.

Update: Michelle Malkin has more on the story.

Update II: Ed at Hot Air provides his take.
