Politics prevail
Obama kept one of his campaign promises today. He has released federal funds for availability to destroy embryos for research. It was a myth that embryo stem cell research was banned under Bush. He only limited federal funding to research on lines already destroyed. There were NO restrictions on privately funded stem cell research.
Which, as Hot Air points out, led to a scientific breakthrough that has actually worked.
The advocates of this policy cheer the supposed triumph of science over politics, but in truth, it’s the reverse. Over a year ago, researchers found a way to unlock adult stem cells to have the same flexibility as hEsc lines, ie, the ability to transform into any kind of tissue. Bush’s policy in effect pushed the government-funded research in that direction, which prompted the breakthrough. With that process available, we have no need to grind up our offspring to cure diseases, especially since grinding up our offspring has yet to result in even one therapeutic result, despite billions of dollars of research into hEsc. A scientific approach would dictate that we follow success instead of failure.
Politics won out in the end, now tons of our federal dollars will be spent destroying embryos. Like we don’t spend enough of it destroying babies through abortion.
As someone who has experience on both sides — I had frozen embryos in storage for three months AND I have family members that suffer from diseases this research purports to help — I know I would never give up those frozen embryos to help my family.
One of those embryos became my daughter. I always looked at those embryos as my potential children and was keenly aware of that for those three months. I worried about equipment failures. I worried about them accidentally being discarded. I could no more have donated them to science than give my daughter to them now.
